Tough Mudder: Are you daring enough?

Monday 16 April, 2012 by Charlotte

Tired of your regular physical activities? Looking for something fun and a little bit different? Then get a team together and take on the ultimate challenge of Tough Mudder! It's tough, it's daring, it's all about teamwork and it makes for a wicked time!

Two fit, enthusiastic and tough comrades from the Cancer Council faced their fears, stared challenge in the eyes and bowed to their forces, taking the pledge:
- I understand that Tough Mudder is not a race but a challenge.
- I put my teamwork and camaraderie before my course time
- I do not whine - kids whine.
- I help my fellow mudders complete the course.
- I overcome all fears.

The first Tough Mudder event in Australia took place on Phillip Island in early April. It comprised a 20km run and aims to test your endurance, strength, mental grit, fitness and above all, your ability to work in a team and help each other out.

Bianca from Quit and Liz from the Cancer Prevention Centre, both began training three months before the event with dedicated and enthusiastic friends. Their training involved circuit and cardio training two to three times a week to help get through a day of laughter, challenges, getting outside and being active in a new and adventurous way!

Whether you come dressed to tackle the course as a Spartan or a Telly Tubby, the day encourages teamwork. In a group of 22, all dressed as Spartans, Bianca completed the course with friends and they also created their own challenges along the way. All group members had to cross the finish line with their entire costume (on or off) and at random obstacles shouted their warrior chant. They worked together to pull each other up over the great wall of Everest, run through electric wires, jump into ice water or crawl through mud baths.

Liz described it in the beginning as, "daunting because of the unknown", but it didn't take her long to lap up the mud and face her demons making the comment that it was a, "ridiculous amount of fun".

The event is taking place again in Sydney in September this year. In 2013 Tough Mudder will head to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth with high hopes it will reach Adelaide and Cairns also.

So don't be afraid, if you're looking for a new and adventurous day out with friends to tackle your fears and be active then get into the spirit for 2013 and start training soon! If it helps to face your fears dressed up as Elmo or Braveheart then make it happen. In the end, it is all about teamwork, challenging yourself and being active, and it doesn't get much tougher than that.
