How to make exercise work for you

If I had a dollar for every time I said ‘I'm going to the gym after work' but instead went home to sit on the couch, I'd be loaded.

I was trying to be a gym after-work kind of person.

I'd start my day with the best intentions – I'd pack my gym gear and plan which workout to do.

But by the time 5pm came around, my enthusiastic plans were nowhere to be found.

It's not that I don't like exercise or don't want to keep fit. I do!

But over the years I've learnt that I'm a morning exercise person who loves getting out in the fresh air.

So, realistically, going to a cooped up gym in the evening was probably never going to work.

And that's the thing about exercise.

Everyone is different. Some would rather go for a jog than do weights. Some prefer to hit the gym in the morning, while others prefer later sessions.

To really make exercise habits last, you need to learn what works for you.

Try a variety of activities and sports and do them at different times and locations to really determine your best workout personality.

Here are some tips to help you make exercise work for you:

  • Find a friend to exercise with  – you're more likely to commit when someone else is involved. And you get to catch-up, too!
  • Exercise when it suits you. The time of day when you have the most energy and the time that is most convenient are good starting points.
  • If you know you like a particular sport or activity, stick to it. Find a club or sporting event to keep you interested.
  • Make small, measurable and realistic goals to keep you motivated.
  • Variety is the spice of life – and this is also true when it comes to keeping fit, so incorporate a variety of sports and activities into your week.
  • Use a diary or an app such as LiveLighter's activity planner to plan and track your progress.
  • Don't forget to include incidental exercise such as walking instead of driving and taking the stairs instead of the lift – every bit counts!
