It's that time of year again... it's starting to look a lot like summer. For some of us, that means long lazy days at the beach, backyard barbeques on the weekends and general lolling around in pleasant temperatures relaxing and enjoying ourselves.
For others of us, who maybe work at SunSmart and write about melanoma and skin cancer every day, it means something quite different.
It involves dashing from one destination to another, while frantically attempting to find cover under any nearby tree, bush or shade-casting object along the way.
It means constant mental calculations around SPF plus time in the sun minus excessive sweating from jumping in and out of trees.
It results in globs of sunscreen randomly dotted on the eyes and forehead that got forgotten in the rubbing in process and a Geisha-like appearance thanks to copious amounts of the stuff.
Add to that is the mad, frizzy hair that no hairspray on the planet can save and scarves draped across every piece of exposed skin resulting in a nun-esque/blanket look.
It's nearly enough to drive me back to the motherland. Glorious Ireland, where the sun's ultraviolet rays rarely if ever, hit extreme levels. It's a skin cancer survivor's paradise - funnily enough tourism Ireland hasn't highlighted that wonderful fact in any recent campaigns!
But I digress. The point is, I am a complete mental case in summer - fashionable, I ain't!
But thanks to SunSmart's new partnership with Melbourne designer JASONGRECH , I have realised that it doesn't have to be like this. This summer JASONGRECH has designed the Savvy Chic dress to help fashionistas beat the burn while looking smoking hot!
We had a great time at the JASONGRECH studios shooting the dress for various looks including a casual summer barbeque and the races by adding parasols, sunnies and a floppy hat! Check out some of the footage below.
Jason has previously been involved with the Designers for Daffodil Day project since it began in 2009, and has a personal connection to cancer.
"I know the effects of cancer all too well, so it's been great to be involved in a campaign like this that makes cancer prevention fashionable! I hope this campaign shows women how easy it can be to incorporate sophisticated and fashionable sun protection items into their summer wardrobes," he said.
So watch out - this summer, I'm releasing my inner fashion guru and having fun with sun protection.
Floppy hats are everywhere this season and they're not expensive. Hit up your local Target and grab a bargain. Parasols are also an excellent way to ensure mobile coverage wherever you go. Add a handy Ezi-Clip sunscreen to your purse and you can look good and be protected for the sun at the same time.
